10) Camel Riding
Morocco is the perfect place to experience camel riding. I did this in the Sahara Desert but it can also be done at almost all costal cities as camel riding along the beach is a popular preference.
9) Aït Benhaddou
Aït Benhaddou is a UNESCO World Heritage Site thats stunning location has been home to the film sets of well known productions such as Game of Thrones, The Mummy, Gladiator, Kingdom of Heaven, The Jewel of the Neil and many more. From its peak the snowy Atlas Mountains, barren desert and surrounding green oasis can all be admired.
8) Casablanca
Be sure to walk around the Hassan II Mosque – over 6,000 traditional Moroccan artisans contributed to the intricate mosaics adorning the walls.
7) Fez
Unfortunately I wasn’t able to make it to Fez on my trip but it will definitely be on my itinerary next time around. The medina (old city) of Fez is renowned for its bustling streets filled with market stalls, craft workshops and mosques.
6) Essaouira
Out of all the costal cities we visited Essaouira was my favourite – the old city district was vibrant, the beach activities (quad biking, camel riding, paragliding etc) had a fun vibe and the markets were great for practicing those bartering skills. I ended up purchasing the handmade leather backpack shown in the picture below for the equivalent of $35 AUD 😀 !
5) SUV Riding in the Sahara Desert
This activity might not be for everyone but I absolutely loved it! It was an awesome and unique way to take in the surreal sand dunes.
4) Atlas Mountains
The Atlas Mountains stretch across northwestern Africa through Algeria, Morocco and Tunisia and whilst they were not snowy during my visit, the snow covered peaks of the higher ranges could be seen from where we were driving. The Atlas Mountains are a tribute to the vastly diverse scenery you can find in Morocco.
3) Marrakech
Marrakech is buzzing with people, markets, food, exotic animals and music. Jamaa el Fna is the central square of the city and is located in the medina (old city) district. It is the main port of call for both tourists and locals and can be a tad overwhelming as there is just so much going on. During the day you will witness snake charmers, bellydancers and berber men with monkeys – be prepared to give a tip of about 20 Dirham if you want to take a photo of these performers. I personally found the snake charmers and monkeys quite distressing as the animals I saw were not being treated very well and did not appear to be in good condition, but it was still an interesting cultural experience.
You can get leather goods, trinkets, souvenirs and fake brand clothes, shoes and sunnies from countless markets. There are also many food stalls and restaurants that surround the square. I really recommend taking advantage of the views that many of the restaurants have of the square – the picture below was taken at the table I was sitting at.
2) Dades Gorge
Featured in an episode of Top Gear as an ‘Epic Road to Drive Before you Die’ – Dades Gorge is a renowned scenic route that lies between the Atlas Mountains and the Jbel Saghro that’s natural beauty draws people from around the world.
