Top 10 Budapest Attractions

Budapest is a city that offers travellers so much– picturesque suburbs, food markets, stunning buildings, amazing nightlife and friendly locals. Here are the top attractions to experience when exploring this exciting city.

1. Hungarian Parliament Building

Arguably the most impressive building in Budapest, the Hungarian Parliament Building and its surrounding gardens are stunning. A wonderful view of the structure can also be viewed from across the Dante river.

The crazy thing about this photo is that is is not edited at all!! Because of the lighting I feel like this photo looks more like a drawing!

2. St Stephens Basilica

A very impressive basilica both inside and out, it is also free to go inside this attraction.

3. Széchenyi thermal bath

This is Budapest’s most popular bath for a few reasons – firstly it is a mixed bath meaning anyone can visit any day of the week. Additionally it is known for some crazy pool parties depending on what season you are visiting. You can hire swimmers (Women – HUF 1,000; Deposit: HUF 4,000. Men – HUF 1,000; Deposit: HUF 2,500) and towels (HUF 500; Deposit: HUF 1,000). Alcoholic and non-acoholic drinks are also on sale.

Such a fun and relaxing place to visit!

4. Fisherman’s Bastion

In my opinion this is the most charming area of Budapest but admittedly quite touristy.

The quaint and colourful streets of Fishermans Bastion
Don’t miss out on Matthias Church while in the area, it is very beautiful on the inside and the viewpoint over Budapest from here is also amazing!

5. Buda Castle

This is an iconic Budapest attraction that is particularly impressive from the outside.

6. Dohany Street Synagogue

Definitely take your time wandering through the exhibition and artworks on display which are separate to the synagogue but included in the entrance free (3000 HUF/adult, 2000 HUF/students).

7. Danube Bank Walk (Jewish Memorial)

Walking from Elisabeth Bridge to Margaret Bridge gives you a great feel for Budapest. On the way you will pass a Jewish monument on the banks of the Danube river to honor those killed by fascist Arrow Cross militiamen in Budapest during the second World War. I also walked across Margaret Bridge when I got to the end and back up the other side (which had the great views of the Hungarian Parliament House previously mentioned).

A haunting reminder of the city’s past.

8. City Park

This is a really nice place to chill after a big day of sightseeing. Renting a bike to explore the park is very easy and a popular tourist activity.

Budapest in Spring is simply stunning.

9. Hungarian Food Markets

Not only your chance to eat traditional Hungarian food, but also eat on a budget. The market is two floors – the second floor has more options for lunches and dinners where as the first floor is mostly fresh produce.

Lángos were delicious and cheap!

10. Szimpla Kert

One of my favourite nights out on my travels was my weekend in Budapest. The ruin bars have an amazing charm to them, they are filled with artsy junk items and funky decor. Couple this with cheap drinks and great music and you’ve got the perfect combo for a epic night out. I would even go as far to say that Budapest nightlife rivals that of Barcelona and Amsterdam in its own unique way, so definitely head out at night during your time here.

Overall I had a blast in Budapest, it was definitely one of those cities that I can see myself visiting again. If you have any questions about the attractions named in my list feel free to comment!
